Why Get Dental Implants?
When a tooth is lost, the integrity of the jaw bone may be compromised. Jaw bone that is not in contact with the root of a tooth can slowly erode, leading to the displacement of the surrounding teeth and, in some cases, infection. A dental implant can be embedded under the gum line and the bone will fuse with the implant through a process known as osseointegration. By maintaining the integrity of your jaw with a dental implant, you can save yourself from excess pain and dental work later on.
The Procedure
Full Mouth
When you arrive on the day of your procedure, you will be seated comfortably in our waiting area. Soon after, our staff will escort you to the procedure room where you will be sedated with an anesthetic to rest comfortably throughout the surgery. The oral surgeon will remove the remaining teeth and place implants. He will then take an impression of your mouth to be used for the creation of your new teeth.
After the procedure is finished, you’ll slowly wake up and will be released to return home later that day. You’ll be prescribed medication to help manage any discomfort you may feel while healing at home. During your healing period, the implants will naturally fuse with your jawbone, and the lab technicians will prepare your permanent set of teeth.
When the lab has finished creating your teeth, you’ll return to your local dentist who will fit your prosthetic teeth onto your implants. Your dentist will ensure the fit and bite are satisfactory.
Single Tooth
- Local Anesthesia: The numbing of specific areas in your mouth through injection.
- IV Sedation: The administering of mild doses of sedatives through the vein to reduce anxiety, block pain, and put patients into a twilight state.
If there is still a tooth remaining where the dental implant will be placed, the tooth will be extracted at this time. The surgeon will then clean and remove any infection present in the gum or bone in that area.
If the underlying bone isn’t yet dense enough for the placement of an implant, the surgeon will perform bone grafting. Natural or artificial bone material will be affixed to the bone area and given a healing period to fuse together. This time period is subject to vary according to the patient’s anatomy and healing.
After this healing period, your bone will be thick and dense enough for the implant placement procedure. You will return to our office to have the implant placed and then undergo a 3 month healing period as the implant fuses to the jaw.
After this second healing period, your final procedure will be a simple fitting of the crown onto the implant, which can be done in our partnering dental office or at your local dentist.
