Diabetes Mellitus (Types I and II)

Diabetes is another health care issue that needs to be addressed before treatment.  If your condition is managed with oral medication, you should be able to have oral surgery in a normal manner.

Insulin-dependent diabetics usually do better with a morning appointment and can eat and take their insulin normally for minor procedures. For more extensive procedures needing IV anesthesia, a normal diet is prohibited.  You will be instructed to check your blood sugar and take one-half of your normal insulin dosage before you arrive. You will have an IV fluid breakfast (dextrose and water IV), and you will be monitored throughout your procedure. Most patients who have managed diabetes at home with Acu-Checks and Insulin adjustments do very well with office surgery.  You may want to consult with your physician, for either Type I or Type II Diabetes, to ease your mind, making your visit with us more comfortable.  Such a consultation will also alert your physician to your need for oral care and prompt him/her to consult with us regarding any concerns he/she may have.  Of course, if you are currently having difficulty with the management of your condition, you should inform us so that we may consult with your physician prior to treatment.
